Highway 1 Congestion And Safety Improvement Project
In 2009, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors adopted Phase 1 of the Highway 1 Safety and Mobility Improvement Study. The study, a result of an intensive community-based planning process in Miramar, El Granada and Princeton, developed a plan to better serve vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle mobility in the Highway 1 corridor.
In 2012, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors adopted Phase 2 of the Highway 1 Safety and Mobility Improvement Study. Phase 2, also developed through an intense community-based planning process, identified transportation improvements along the Highway 1 corridor in Moss Beach and Montara to assist in the mobility of vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists.
Both Phase 1 and Phase 2 identified a series of pedestrian crossings, raised medians and left turn lanes to improve vehicular, pedestrian and bicycle mobility. In 2012, San Mateo County received $1.5 million in county-wide transportation funds to design and permit these congestion and safety projects.
Planning Study for Highway 1 Congestion & Safety Improvement Project
Highway 1 Safety And Mobility Study
The study purpose is developing a plan for Highway 1 to better serve all users. Planning efforts by San Mateo County and other agencies are shaping development, recreation, infrastructure, and environmental policies within the study area. The community-based planning process engaged citizens in developing short and long-term transportation improvement strategies consistent with established regional policies.
One of the biggest challenges is that the corridor must provide for commuters and high volume vehicle traffic on weekends, while maintaining safety and comfort for residents. It must also provide for pedestrians, people with mobility impairments, and bicyclists who are using the highway right of way or trying to cross.
