Redwood City — The County of San Mateo is currently recruiting for its new Independent Civilian Advisory Commission on the Sheriff’s Office and is encouraging a diverse array of residents to apply.
The new commission will advise the Board of Supervisors about community-police relations, accountability, transparency and public engagement. The Board created the commission in December.
The commission will have seven voting members, plus two alternates. Five members will be nominated by County supervisors from their respective districts, one by the sheriff, and one at-large member and two at-large alternates by the Board liaisons. Selected members of the Sheriff’s CARE program and the Youth Commission will serve as non-voting members. All nominations must be approved by the full Board of Supervisors.
Meetings will be held at least four times a year, but dates and locations are yet to be determined. The commission is anticipated to launch this summer.
Eligible applicants must be county residents. Citizenship status is not considered. The County is actively seeking new and diverse voices for the commission and encouraging those who have not previously engaged to apply.
